Where oh where do I even start this post when that big hunk of chocolate is staring me in the face?

Luckily I planned ahead enough to save myself some, so I can nibble while I think about that question.

That’s better. The worst kind of food blogging torture is trying to write a dessert post when you don’t have any left to eat. Actually… the worst food blogging torture might be dish duty. But writing about chocolate without eating chocolate is clearly high up on the list.

How about reading about chocolate without eating chocolate? Sorry about that. Not to interfere with your evening plans, but I have to say that this cake is worth rushing home after work to make. Dare I say it’s even worth skipping the gym to rush home and make? I have, on occasion, been known to cancel my evening exercise plans for a reeeeally good-looking chocolaty dessert recipe. Not that I think you would ever sink to that level… but if you would consider it, now should be the time.

I play with food a lot. –> I go to the grocery store a lot. –> I have a lot of awkward encounters with grocery store cashiers.

Let’s talk about the different forms that awkwardness can take at different stores.

Trader Joe’s cashiers are aggressively jolly and overly excited about every item you’re purchasing. They’ve tried it all and loved it! Sometimes I think they are commissioned.

Whole Foods cashiers are trained to engage you in conversation at the expense of your privacy. A simple “how are you?” won’t suffice. “What are you doing after this?” is much more common. <– Clearly I am going home to cook dinner. It is 6 pm and I am at the grocery store. Let’s put 2 and 2 together.

Whoa, where has this week gone?

I had the odd sensation of looking down at my watch yesterday at 3 pm and thinking, “why is this thing backwards?” Because it felt like 9 am. Aaaand it was 6 hours later than that. I guess I can’t complain about the workday and workweek flying by, but man… I sure have a lot to do before Monday!

But let’s take a step back, and take a deep breath, because it’s Friday.

I can’t even type “it’s Friday” without singing that terrible Rebecca Black song in my head. It’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday…

Anyway, it is Friday, and I think Friday is a great time to talk about weekend breakfast-y things like pancakes.

But not just any pancakes… chocolate pancakes. Chocolate rye pancakes, for that matter!

I think it’s about that time of the week where we need some chocolate.

We need some chocolate, not just me… right?

And the best part is that this is breakfast chocolate.

Actually, I take that back. First of all, this could be breakfast… and I can’t deny that I ate some at that general time of day this weekend… but it could also definitely be dessert. But the real best part is that the recipe is straight out of my friend Julia’s new cookbook!

If you’ve been reading this blog for even a couple weeks, Julia from The Roasted Root probably needs no introduction. She’s a gluten-free goddess, a pancake Wonder Woman, and (if it’s possible) an even bigger lover of roasted vegetables than yours truly. I mean, her blog name kind of gives it away! And her newest and maybe most exciting title is that of cookbook author. Her first cookbook, Delicious Probiotic Drinks: 75 Recipes for Kombucha, Kefir, Ginger Beer, and Other Naturally Fermented Drinks, was just released by Skyhorse Publishing. Hip hip hooray!
